Let’s turn tradition on its head and create a DIY Christmas sweater that’s not only festive but also downright cute. In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to transform a simple white V-neck long sleeve t-shirt from Amazon into a holiday masterpiece using colorful pom-poms from the dollar store and trusty Gorilla hot glue.
The Ugly Sweater Christmas Party is still a popular event, so if you want to make a DIY version, I love this simple idea! When I saw some colorful pom-poms at Dollarama, I knew they’d be perfect for creating an ugly sweater… that’s kind of cute too!

Materials You’ll Need:
- White V-neck long sleeve t-shirt, sweatshirt or cardigan (I used this shirt from Amazon, or thrift stores are a wonderful place to find shirts for this project)
- Colorful pom-poms (Dollar store – because budget-friendly is our style!)
- Gorilla hot glue – it works great on fabric (or use regular fabric glue)
- hot glue gun
- piece of cardstock paper
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Get your hands on a plain white V-neck long sleeve t-shirt. The beauty of starting with a simple base is that you can let your creativity shine.
Step 2: Grab Your Pom-Poms
Head to the dollar store and pick up an assortment of colorful pom-poms. The more variety, the better – we’re going for a festive explosion of colors!
Step 3: Plan Your Design
Before diving in with the hot glue, plan where you want your pom-poms to go. Before placing the pom poms, slip a piece of cardstock paper between the layers of your t-shirt. Consider creating a cute pattern or going for a random, whimsical arrangement – it’s all about what makes you smile!
I placed my pom-poms in a relatively even pattern across the entire front of my top, but shaping them like a Christmas wreath or like candy canes could also be super cute.
Step 4: Glue ‘Em On!
Time to get sticky! Use your Gorilla hot glue to attach the pom-poms to the front of your t-shirt. Take it one pom-pom at a time, pressing down gently to ensure they’re securely attached.
Step 5: Add Your Personal Touch
Feel free to mix things up by adding extra embellishments if you have them lying around – perhaps some glitter, ribbon bows, sequins, jingle bells, tinsel garland pieces, or even tiny ornaments. Let your creativity run wild!
Step 6: Let It Dry
Give your masterpiece some time to set and dry completely. This ensures your pom-poms stay put and your sweater is ready to shine at the holiday party.
Step 7: Flaunt Your DIY Creation
Put on your newly crafted cute ugly Christmas sweater and get ready for compliments! This unique piece is bound to be a conversation starter, and you can proudly say you made it yourself.
There you have it – a budget-friendly, DIY ugly Christmas sweater that embraces cuteness! So, grab your glue gun, pom-poms, and that plain white tee, and let the holiday crafting begin. And have fun at your Ugly Christmas Sweater Party this year!
