How to Make a Diaper Cake with Pampers

One of my most favourite baby shower gifts was a beautifully handmade diaper cake from my husband’s aunt. Not only was it practical – a mama can never have too many diapers! – but it was also thoughtful and made with love. It was actually one of the things that inspired me to start this blog! Today I’m partnering with Pampers to share with you how to make a beautiful, rustic looking diaper cake gift for the next baby shower you attend. My method doesn’t involve any diaper rolling, and I’ve added a unique topper that I think takes this gift to an adorable level.
Take it from a mama of three girls – a mom can only have so many frilly outfits and blankets for her baby, but she can never have too many diapers! I always appreciated getting diapers as baby gifts when my girls were newly born, and now that three of my good friends have had babies this month, I’m excited to gift them some diapers, too.
For this DIY gift, I’m using Pampers. We used these on my girls, and just the scent and softness of Pampers gets me all teary and brings me back to when my babies were just little. Pampers is the 1st choice of moms in Canada, and Pampers cares for every baby’s happy and healthy development. You can find a whole range of diapers, wipes and training pants from Pampers to provide comfort and protection for all the stages of baby’s little life.
If you also have friends with new babies and are wondering what sorts of baby shower gifts they’ll love the most, check out this interesting infographic from Pampers below that shares what moms regret not including on their registries (like diapers, of course!):
Need more ideas for new baby gifts? I also have an exclusive baby registry page right here on Amazon that includes my top picks for baby shower presents.
Now, let me show you how to gift your Pampers diapers in style by creating a DIY diaper cake with a sweet rustic theme and a unique topper!
(You can also watch an in-depth video tutorial for this diaper cake by scrolling to the bottom of this post.)
Materials:
- a Box of 186 Pampers Swaddlers diapers in Size 1
- round cake pans in three different sizes (I used a 7.5, 9 and 10 inch size)
- 3-4 rolls of various ribbon in multiple sizes and colours (I used ribbons in burlap and mint colours)
- 3 sheets of scrapbook paper in various colours and patterns
- recycled wrapping paper roll
- 2 bamboo skewers
- baker’s twine
- large elastic bands
- small safety pins
- scissors
- glue gun
- store bought or DIY baby slippers (or a small toy) for the topper
Directions:
To begin, start fanning the Pampers along the perimeter of one of the cake pans as shown above. I spaced mine about 2″ apart to create a ruffled effect.
Continue until you’ve circled around the entire perimeter of the cake pan and then tuck the final diaper behind the first one.
Then, add another layer of diapers inside the first row in the same way. Continue adding layers inside the pan until you have nothing but a small circle of space left in the center.
Next, insert the recycled wrapping paper tube into the center of your layers and cut the top of it off so that it’s about 3 times as high as your first “cake” layer. Take an elastic band and carefully wrap it around this layer to hold everything together.
Remove it from the pan and set this first diaper cake layer aside, and then make two more layers for your diaper cake using this method with the remaining two sizes of cake pans.
Once you’ve made all three layers, set the largest layer down and place the wrapping paper roll in its center. Then, use the roll as an anchor and place your middle sized layer and then your smallest layer on top of the bottom diaper cake layer. Your diaper cake base is complete, and now comes the fun part – decorating!
First, wrap some wide ribbon around the center of each layer as shown above to add some interest and hide the elastic bands. Secure the ribbon at the back of the diaper cake with small safety pins.
You can then layer some thinner ribbon on top of the wider ribbon to add texture, and you can tie them around each layer with a bow if desired.
Now it’s time to make a sweet bunting banner topper that will make your cake extra adorable! Cut 5 small triangles out of your 3 different scrapbook papers. I did this freehand, but you could also use a cutting machine to make these.
Then, cut a piece of baker’s twine that’s slightly shorter than the diameter of your topmost cake layer, and glue the paper triangles to the twine with a hot glue gun. Finally, glue the ends of the banner to the ends of bamboo skewers and carefully poke the skewers into the top of your diaper cake.
As a finishing touch, and to cover the top of your cake, you can pin an adorable pair of baby slippers or a sweet little toy to the top of the cake between your DIY bunting banner.
Your adorable yet practical diaper gift is ready to wow your mama friend at her baby shower. I love how this sweet rustic version turned out, and I can’t wait to give it away!
