Valentine’s Day DIY Waffle Bar

Do you have any special Valentine’s Day traditions with your family? We LOVE Valentine’s Day around here (put totally intended)! My daughters always enjoy putting up special heart themed decorations and we definitely like to do fun Valentine’s baking together at the beginning of February. This year, we thought it would be a lot of fun to have a sweet and special Valentine themed breakfast: a DIY Valentine’s Day waffle bar! Here’s how we made our waffle bar, and here are some ideas so that you can make your own too.
It’s so nice to carve out a lazy morning when you can get the whole family together to enjoy brunch. This V-Day brunch idea doesn’t have to be ON the big day, but it could be close enough to make it feel special.
The trick to making this waffle bar a more relaxing experience to put together, is to do a little advance preparation. You can bake the bacon in the oven instead of on the stove to make the whole thing come together easier, and you could even make the waffles in advance and toast them or broil them minutes before your meal.
Choose any waffle toppings to prepare that your family enjoys. I’ll share with you what we made, but have a look at the suggested waffle toppings list at the bottom of this post for even more ideas.
A yummy waffle bar always begins with a great waffle recipe, and my personal favourite is this one from my Company’s Coming cookbook. It makes the best waffles in my humble opinion! The only thing I do differently from this posted version of the recipe is separate the eggs. I beat the egg whites and fold them into the batter right before I make the waffles.
A heart-shaped waffle iron isn’t a necessity of course, but it sure makes cute waffles for Valentine’s Day! We received ours waaaay back on our wedding day, and you can buy a similar heart waffle maker here.
For our toppings, I prepared some that were sweet and some that were savoury. My family prefers sweet waffle toppings, so we had more of those! For sweet toppings, I put some sliced strawberries, sweetened blackberries, Nutella, butter, and sprinkles in little bowls.
I found some adorable golden arrow spreaders on clearance after Christmas, and they make the cutest accessories!
On the savoury side, I prepared some bacon (in the oven – bake it on parchment paper at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes), scrambled eggs, and my cheater’s Hollandaise sauce.
I finished the spread off with some syrup and whipped cream. I wrapped those containers with heart fabric just for fun!
Our girls had a blast choosing their own toppings and making their brunch customized just for them.
This is such a great, family-friendly brunch idea because everyone can pick and choose their own toppings and the meal can last for a while – it’s a great activity for everyone!

I always cook bacon in the oven! It is seriously the greatest thing ever. No more grease splatters everywhere!
Totally! It’s a great mess saver!
I absolutely love this! I was planning a breakfast in bed for my significant other but I think he might prefer to wake up to an entire breakfast buffet! Thanks for the great ideas 😉

Hey Christina,
This waffle bar looks absolutely scrumptious. I was so happy to stumble on your IG, and then this site of yours. As an Alberta girl myself, I love to support and follow local people. Love your blog. I have been reading your articles with my coffee this morning. 🙂 I have a lot to catch up on.
Quick question…I love the turquoise bowls and baking dish you are using here. Where did you find them all?
Thanks
Jennifer
Thanks, Jennifer! Wonderful to hear that you’re from Alberta too! I found these bowls at Urban Barn last year, and the dish is from The Superstore.
Fabulous idea! Next time I’m with the grandkids I’ll be doing this!!
Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday!!
