Making DIY dryer balls out of wool yarn is easy to do, and they work wonders in the dryer! Wool dryer balls reduce static cling, and can be used over and over again.
Have you ever used dryer balls?
Dryer balls are a reusable alternative to dryer sheets, and they reduce the static cling of the laundry in your clothes dryer.
The wonderful news is that they’re extremely easy to make – you don’t have to be a pro DIYer to make dryer balls from scratch.
I made a set of 3 woolen dryer balls with 3 leftover skeins of 100% wool from a knitting project. You could make these with any wool yarn – even wool yarn that you recycle from an old sweater!

DIY Dryer Balls
Dryer balls are very easy to make and a reusable alternative to dryer sheets. They help reduce static cling in your clothes dryer.
Materials
- 1 skein of 100% wool yarn (I used wool roving)
- crochet hook
- old pantyhose / nylons
- clothes washer & dryer
Instructions
- Using the 100% wool yarn, wrap it a few times around 2 of your fingers, then pull the loop you've created off your fingers.
- Continue wrapping the yarn around the center of that loop, and then keep wrapping the yearn from top to bottom. Keep the wrapping nice and tight.
- Slowly twirl the ball as you wrap the yarn to form a round ball shape.
- Leave a 6" tail of yarn.
- Push a crochet hook through the ball, hook the yarn tail, and pull it through the ball. Trim it with scissors.
- Cut one of the toes off of a pair of pantyhose at about an 8" length.
- Place the yarn ball inside the cut pantyhose, and tie the pantyhose to encase the ball of yarn.
- Wash the ball of yarn on the hottest setting in your clothes washer, and then dry it in your clothes dryer.
- These can be added one at a time to your clothes dryer when drying laundry to reduce static cling.
You can pair these DIY dryer balls with homemade dryer sheets to create a static free, fresh-smelling load of laundry.
