Love is in the air, and there’s nothing quite like spending a cozy Valentine’s Day at home. Check out these cute ideas for making your home more festive without spending a lot of money.
My 3 daughters love Valentine’s Day, so we usually make it a family celebration. I like to decorate for the day and make our house feel cozy and special for my girls. This year, I decorated our dining room with things I had on hand and some simple DIYs for a warm, romantic look.
This blog post is part of a seasonal blog hop. Make sure to check out all of the other Valentine decorating ideas from my blogging friends linked at the bottom of this post!
Valentine’s Day Decor Ideas that are SO easy to make!
Here are some DIY Valentine’s Day decor ideas so you can create a similar, cozy look in your home this month. All of these crafts are easy to create, and you can use supplies from the dollar store, thrift store, or use things you have on hand. These DIY decor ideas can all be used to create a festive dining room look for your family, for a galentine’s day party, or for a kids’ party.
Sew a Fuzzy Heart Pillow
Heart shaped items are always a great way to make a room feel decorated for Valentine’s Day, and this DIY pillow is SO cute and fluffy!
To make it the throw pillow:
- Create a heart-shaped pattern on a large piece of paper or cardboard. I free-handed my pattern.
- Use the pattern to cut a heart shape out of some faux fur fabric and some plain cotton blend fabric that matches.
- Sew the two pieces right sides together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave an opening of a few inches.
- Turn the pillow case right side out and stuff it with polyester fiberfill.
- Stitch the hole shut by hand and you’re all done!
Make a Romantic Centerpiece
Candles always make a space feel cozy and special. To create a romantic centerpiece for your table decor, find a tray and fill it with sparkly votive holders. I used some mercury glass holders and vintage pink glassware I had on hand. You could also use upcycled mason jars for this display. Place faux greenery around the holders, put tea-lights in the holders, light the candles and enjoy the glow!
Create a Valentine’s Day Tree
Christmas trees don’t just have to be for Christmas! When my daughters and I decided we wanted to enjoy the glow of our dining room tree for a while longer, I added some Valentine’s Day themed decorations to turn it into a Valentine tree. I kept it subtle with pink heart plaques from the dollar store, DIY fabric peonies, and white feathers.
Make a Simple Faux Floral Arrangement
Flowers are always a lovely addition to a room, and creating a gorgeous faux floral arrangement is so easy! I like to use this faux peony bundle from Amazon. Use wire cutters to separate each peony, and then place 5-7 flowers in a tall glass vase. You can add real or fake water to the vase for an even more realistic look.
Create Textured Heart Art
If you have some leftover paint, you can add Plaster of Paris to the paint to create a beautifully textured medium. With a dollar store wooden canvas frame, use the paint to create textured heart art for your wall or sideboard! Click here to get the full tutorial for this textured heart wall art.
Wrap Books with Paper
I placed my DIY heart art on our sideboard and added a stack of paper-wrapped books. These are also really easy to make, and you can even use letter stickers to personalize them more!
To make the paper wrapped book stack:
- Wrap some coloured cardstock around an old book. I used a soft pink colour. Cut the paper as needed, fold it over the cover of the book and use Scotch tape to secure it.
- If you want, you can add words to the spine of the book by cutting vinyl letters out with a Cricut, or using letter stickers. I added the words “forever”, “love” and “be mine” to my books.
- Make 3-5 books and tie them with a piece of twine or raffia ribbon. Display on a coffee table or sideboard.
Make a Dollar Store Trinket Bowl
Dollarama often has these heart-shaped bowls, and you can customize them with some nail polish for a watercolour effect! To make these, simply brush some soft pink nail polish onto the base of the bowl and let it dry. You can customize the bowl with vinyl letters like I did, or leave it as-is. These are so pretty to accessorize a shelf or table display for Valentine’s Day. Alternatively, you could coat the bowls with a food-safe coating and use them to hold candy for the kids!
I hope you enjoyed these Valentine’s Day decor ideas! Here’s how our dining room looks for Valentine’s Day. I love the subtle pinks, the soft glow of the candles, and the warmth of the tree. My girls love this space, I love the cozy mood we’ve created, and I can’t wait to enjoy some family dinners here this month!
More easy ways to create a cozy Valentine’s Day look in your home this month:
- hanging a festive DIY Valentine’s Day wreath on your wall or front door
- making a garland out of pom-poms and yarn in shades of pink and white for your mantel or shelf display (or, here’s an easy heart garland idea!)
