With Halloween just around the corner, it’s already time to plan how to decorate our houses and yards to make them extra spooky. Our kids are also so excited to wear their fancy costumes and go trick or treating around the neighborhood! Aside from decorations and costumes, it’s also time to think of what treats we’ll serve for our little guests at Halloween parties. If you’re looking for an easy Halloween food decoration idea, then you’re at the right place. Today I want to show you the simplest hack to make one of the most adorable Halloween food decoration ideas!
When my youngest daughter was in charge of bringing a fruit & veggie tray to her Halloween party at school, I wanted to make it extra cute. However, I didn’t have a lot of time or extra money to spend on the snack so I had to come up with a quick & budget-friendly solution. Enter candy eyes and pre-made chocolate icing!
How to make this easy Halloween fruit & vegetable platter
Putting candy eyes on fruits and vegetables is a great way to turn a healthy snack into a spooky treat. You can start by selecting the fruits and vegetables that you want to use for your snack. Apples, bananas, and oranges are popular choices for fruits, while celery, carrots, and bell peppers are great for vegetables. The mini bell peppers are perfect because they look like little ghosts! Make sure to wash and dry them properly before cutting them into bite-size pieces or slices. You could even use a cookie cutter to shape them into Halloween-themed designs, such as bats, ghosts, and pumpkins.
Next, you can get the candy eyeballs from your local grocery store or here on Amazon. They are usually found in the baking section and come in different sizes and colors. I like Wilton’s smaller size; they’re perfect for small fruits and veggies! The larger ones are great for adding to a cupcake or larger baked goods. To attach them, simply dab a small amount of chocolate icing on the back of each candy eye and stick them on the fruit or vegetable. You can also use the icing to pipe little open mouths on some of the vegetables like I’ve done here with the peppers and celery sticks – so cute! I find the small amount of chocolate doesn’t mess with the flavor of any of the fruits or veggies.
Cute additions to the snack platter
To make the Halloween snack even more fun, you can also use pretzel sticks, raisins, or chocolate chips to make them look like spiders, mummies, or monsters. For example, you can use pretzel sticks as legs for your celery spider or raisins as eyes for your banana mummies. You can even create a fruit salad with different fruits and vegetables and add the candy eyes and other ingredients to give it a Halloween twist. Here’s a cute idea for a Halloween fruit salad recipe with a fun jack-o-lantern carved watermelon!
For my easy Halloween snack platter, I added some peeled mandarin oranges to the tray and stuck a pretzel stick in the middle of each orange. Now they look like mini pumpkins! You could also add a small bowl with fruit dip or vegetable dip to the tray if desired.
Another great thing about this Halloween food decoration idea is that it’s easy to prepare and can be done ahead of time. You can cut the fruits and vegetables and store them in a container in the fridge. On the day of the party, all you need to do is assemble them on a plate or skewer and serve them to your little guests. So simple!
This simple DIY platter is also a great addition to an adult Halloween party if you’re in charge of appetizers. I brought a similar tray to a neighborhood party, and it was a huge hit (and a nice break from all the chips and Halloween dessert selections)!
Happy Halloween and have fun making your easy & fun Halloween platter!
