For Little C’s 7th birthday party (can you believe it… 7 years old?!) last month, we hosted a Sugar Plum Fairy themed party. It was Little C’s idea after we went to see The Nutcracker ballet in December, and I thought it was the sweetest theme ever! Here’s how we decorated for and celebrated her Sugar Plum fairy party. I’m sharing some fun and inexpensive Nutcracker themed party ideas along with a video tutorial on how to make adorable glittery ombre tutu skirts. Let the party begin!
One way I like to make a party budget friendly is by focusing on only a couple of highly decorated areas. I go all out on those, and don’t worry about the rest of the house.
Usually I like to decorate a little dessert table or corner that features the cake, and then decorate around the table where we eat. For this year’s party, I chose to set up a little corner of our kitchen counter as a dessert area.
We already had this silver glittery Nutcracker on hand from Christmas, so I used him in the party decor. Little C definitely wanted lavender as the main colour of the party’s decor, and I threw in the silver from Mr. Nutracker and some little bits of aqua from our kitchen decor. We both simply loved the aqua, silver and lavender colour combo!
Paper straws are another inexpensive and fun birthday party touch, and here I’ve displayed them in one of my teal coloured drinking glasses.
Little C was adamant on picking out sweets that matched her party colours (SO CUTE!), so we displayed those in jars and pretty bowls around the cake. This was a really easy theme to find decorations for because we could recycle a lot of decor from Christmas like snowflake candle holders and ornaments.
The cake was pretty simple, but I was proud of it nonetheless! I used a cake mix, made four layers, and iced it with vanilla buttercream. Then I piped some lavender roses on top and set it on a vintage glass cake stand.
To give the cake stand some purple ballerina flair, I hot glued some glittery tulle around the edge of the stand. I just pleated it as I went to give it a gathered look.
We found these lavender and aqua butterfly decorations at the craft store and I loved how they tied our colours together and reminded me of fairies. We used them around the dessert table and around the kitchen. The pretty sparkly twig and snowflake ornaments were in my Christmas decoration arsenal – perfect!
For a craft for Little C’s guests to do, we made these ballerina fairy clothespin dolls. I tried to come up with something that didn’t involve much more than painting and taping, so these were made with lots of pipe cleaners and washi tape.
I think they turned out so cute! If you want to download a free PDF instruction sheet on how to make these darling fairy ballerina clothespin dolls, click here or on the image below:
Beside the kitchen table where we did crafts and ate our snack, I decorated our art rod with mercury glass Christmas ornaments and more butterflies.
We placed some snowflakes in the kitchen table centerpiece.
Above the table, I hung a purple banner along with 10 handmade purple glittery tutus:
Not only did the tutus make the room look festive and party-ready, but they doubled as the girls’ favours when they left. Want to learn how to make a glittery ombre tulle tutu skirt for your little one? Here’s a video tutorial:
I always like to keep parties simple so that the kids have lots of time to play! We did a craft, a snack, cake, the opening of the presents, and then they played around the house after that.
It got nice and LOUD (8 little girls… OH MY), but we all had a lot of fun!
Happy 7th birthday, my Little C! I can’t believe how grown up you’re getting. *tears*

Everything looks so pretty! That’s a great tip about only decorating a few key areas. I usually get overwhelmed just thinking about decorating for a party!

Nicely done! Little C is a lucky gal… and that tutu! Way too sweet!!!
What I like about this post is how you can take the basics and apply them across the board to other occasions. There might not be a tutu involved, but the ideas are really great! Thanks for sharing : )
Now this is a really cute birthday party theme. This gives me the idea for my baby girl’s birthday.
