Kids’ Bathroom Reveal and some great tips for post-reno clean up

Well, we’ve finally done it! After over 2 years of living in Our DIY House, we’ve finally finished the kids’ bathroom upstairs. Can you believe it?! I can hardly fathom it myself. It was one of those jobs that seemed to drag on forever. Once it was functional, we lost our motivation to finish it. I was hesitant to get started on it again knowing the dust and mess that had built up after a couple of years of high-traffic kid use. I finally found the inspiration to deep clean and finish the bathroom thanks to Lysol bathroom cleaners – they stick well to walls and other surfaces to really clean deep down, especially during a small renovation.
The bathroom looks so much better than it did before. It’s adorable, clean and tidy for my girls (and us!) to use daily.
A person spends so much time in the bathroom each day – it’s important to make it functional, pretty and clean!
Here’s what we did in our kids’ bathroom. The concept behind this happy design was using bright, fresh colours that reminded me of a sunshiny day.
We purchased a plain mirror from a big box store and framed it with the trim we have around our windows and doors. The corners are simply butt joined for a Craftsman-styled look.
My handy hubby tiled the backsplash with the same glass mosaic tile we have at the top of the shower.
The vanity is two kitchen sink cupboards from a big box store that we mounted directly on the ground to make them short enough for the girls to use.
Our hook wall for laundry bags and towels still works so well in here! In case you missed it, here’s how I built our bathroom beadboard hook wall.
I also lengthened our shower curtain so that I could mount it close to the ceiling of the shower. It makes such a difference to hang curtains up high! You’ll notice that it makes the room feel taller.
To lengthen the curtain, I simply hemmed a piece of gray fabric that was the same length as the curtain, and then sewed it to the bottom. Then, I hemmed the sides and finished the seam off with some cute pom-pom trim that matches the happy, whimsical nature of the room.
I hung the You Are My Sunshine sign that I made a while ago above the towel bar for a fun splash of colour.
For the finishing and most important touch, I gave the entire room a deep clean with Lysol® Foam Bathroom Cleaner Aerosol: Summer Fresh, Lysol® Bathroom Cleaner Trigger: Summer Fresh, and Lysol® Toilet Bowl Cleaner. Boy, did this room need a good cleaning after the reno (and a couple of years of toddler / preschooler use)!
Lysol® Bathroom Cleaner Trigger works wonders! It’s a foamy cleaner that sticks well to walls and other surfaces to really clean deep down. It gets rid of soap scum really well, and it even works to polish up our chrome fixtures and everyday dirt and grime to leave your bathroom smelling clean and fresh.
Lysol® Foam Bathroom Cleaner Aerosol on our tiled shower walls. This was powerful and had a great reach to help with the toughest of cleaning jobs. It instantly turned to a thick foam that I let sit on the walls for a few minutes before I sponged it away. Say goodbye to mildew or harmful bacteria!
Lysol® Disinfectant Toilet Bowl Cleaner made our potty the cleanest it’s ever been (killing 99.9% of germs). The thick formula adheres to stains leaving my entire toilet bowl sparkling clean. I barely had to scrub!
From Toilet to Tub and Sink to Shower, Lysol® has a full suite of bathroom products to help disinfect and clean your bathroom.
Another room in Our DIY House has been checked off the list, and we couldn’t be happier. Hooray for clean and adorable kids’ bathrooms!

Hi! What color did you use on the bathroom walls?
You did a really nice job with the kids bathroom renovation. My favorite part is the shower, the tiles aren’t just plain white which is a nice change from some peoples showers. A lot of people feel the more white the better, but adding a lot of color like this is what I like best!
I love the shower curtain! Can you please share where you got it?!? And also the wall color?!! This would be so perfect in our new house and be so beautiful for my daughters to share! Thank you.
Thank you! I found the shower curtain at Homesense (Homegoods in the US), and the wall colour is Mystic Sea by Valspar.
Hey Christina!
This is amazing to see such a neat and clean bathroom remodel .I think this is a perfect bathroom remodel for kids.Kids will be kids only they just know how to play and mess all over .But it is a simple and effective way to make a bathroom clean and thus we ensure it dust free .
I really like the chart paper that you have hang on the wall with quotes as ” you are my sunshine”.Also the light colour on the walls and curtains are beauty enhancing factors of your bathroom.
Thanks for sharing !

Thank you, Laura.
Hey Christina,
I am looking for a new disinfectant as the one I use right now has a very strong smell and my daughter hates it, so did Lysol also had a strong fragrance?
Hello Sarah,
It’s not too strong of a smell but it does have a fragrance.
Keep the colors in the small bathroom remodel simple. Busy wall paper or too many colors makes the space feel small and cluttered.
Thanks for the suggestion, Melissa.

You can spare yourself some scouring time by spraying on cleaning products and giving them time to work. This is particularly useful in the bathroom—most cleaning products don’t instantaneously disinfect, so abandoning them on gives them time to kill germs and separate muck, which means you have less work to do.

Most of the kids are willingly okay and used to with a clean bathroom. So its really mandatory to keep your bathroom design nice and clean. Thanks for the nice article on bathroom design. Loved it.
This watery blue tone is perfect for a bathroom, a space that we typically want to feel bright and clean. It may be a bit bold for a master bath, or for all the walls of a bathroom, but it’s just the right intensity for cabinetry or for a smaller powder room.
It’s so relaxing when you are in the ground for warm up. thanks for the post
