Dining Room Refresh with a Colourful Rug

I’ve added a huge pop of colour and pattern to our dining room with a gorgeous and colourful area rug! Come see what a difference it’s made in the room, plus my tips on how to decorate around a bold rug.

If you’ve been hanging out here with me for any amount of time, you know that I LOVE colour in decor. I’ve played with neutral schemes here and there, but I always come back to colourful rooms. They give me life!

When I saw this gorgeous Topaz Area Rug on The Brick’s website, I instantly fell in love. I felt like it was made just for me with it’s hues of aqua, navy and pink. I don’t usually love orange, but the orange on this rug looked so beautiful with all the other colours, and I thought it could be a perfect colour combo going into Fall.

Truth be told, I haven’t ever really liked the sisal rug we had under this table over the last few months. It was moved from another room, and the brownish rug with the brownish table wasn’t doing anything for me:

I was pretty certain the colours of the Topaz Area Rug would make our Keswick Dining Table pop, and it sure did! Here’s how the room looks now:

What a difference a rug makes, hey? Not only is the colour better in our dining room, but the size is perfect too. It’s always a good idea to have a rug that’s large enough for you to keep your dining chairs on it whether they’re pulled in or out, and this 8 x 11 rug fits the bill.

I also love its worn, vintage look and that it feels so silky on my feet. It’s made of soil resistant fibres though, so it will be nice and easy to clean which is a must in any dining room with kids!

To tie in some of the colours of the rug and celebrate the end of summer, I made a little floral arrangement on our table with flowers from a local farm and weeds from our yard. I love how these warm yellows and oranges tie into the colours of the rug and hint toward the coming Autumn!

The vintage amber vase and flowers also look right at home on the warm wood of our Keswick Table. I truly can’t wait to design a tablescape for our Fall celebrations here soon!

 

My tips on incorporating a bold coloured rug into your space?

1: If you love the colours of the rug, you’ll find a way to make it work

If the rug you’re looking at has colours that you’ve always loved, don’t let the idea of it not being flexible enough stop you from trying it! I’ve always loved aquas, so I knew I’d love this rug almost anywhere in my home.

2. Try keeping the rest of your room subtle

With a bold rug being the star of the show, consider using less accessories and colours in the rest of your room so that your gorgeous rug doesn’t have any competition.

3. Tie in colours with florals & small accessories

Make a nod to your new, colourful rug through floral arrangements and smaller accessories in one or two of the colours from the rug. Here in my dining room, I’m pulling the yellows and oranges of the rug into my floral arrangement.
