We gave our basement TV & play room a much needed makeover! It has modern farmhouse vibes, but there are pops of colour and kid-friendly accessories infused throughout the whole space to make it special for our three daughters. Come see the before & after and get some ideas for your own basement hangout room!

This makeover has been months in the making, and I’m SO excited to share it with you today! I love combining beautiful aesthetics with practical solutions in home decor, and I truly think this room is a lovely combo.
When we built our home in 2013, we had our basement drywalled, and laid down our own flooring and primed the walls. We’ve since been able to finish my husband’s TV/gaming room (you can see it here) and the guest bedroom (see it here), but the main area in our basement has been untouched.
This is a space where my girls’ toys are kept as well as a TV and books. Now that my girls are getting older, we thought it was finally time to donate most of the baby and toddler toys and setup a space that could grow with our daughters.
We went through every single toy and book and donated everything we didn’t use. My sister took our leather couches, and they are the perfect addition to her modern industrial condo.
I knew I wanted to move our Paris sectional down here because it’s so comfortable and still in such great shape. It’s oversized style is comfy, but its tufted seat makes it look stylish. And then when I saw this gorgeous piece from The Brick, the modern farmhouse theme for this basement makeover was set in stone:
This is the Sydney Barn-Door 6-Piece Entertainment Center and it’s so perfect for a basement media room (or any space where you want to hide a TV)!
Beautiful barn doors conceal our TV and other electronics while practical shelves flank the sides. This unit is heavy, great quality, and I absolutely love the rustic style.
The barn doors easily slide open when we want to watch TV, and the shelves beneath the TV offer plenty of storage for our video game consoles, video games, and other electronics. We bolted the whole unit firmly into the cement basement wall and centered it in front of our sectional.
And we are so thrilled with our new TV – the LG 55″ C8 OLED 4K UHD Smart Television from The Brick. This TV has been on my hubby’s wishlist for quite some time, so I’m not sure who will use it more – the kids or him!
The screen has amazing contrast (we love watching nature shows the best on it so far!), and it’s easy for my girls to use because it’s a Smart TV with voice recognition. It’s incredibly thin and looks so nice in our entertainment unit.
My girls LOVE playing with Lego, so when I chose a new coffee table for the space I made sure it was large enough to accommodate this simple Lego tray we made from a sheet of plywood. We can move the tray off and on the coffee table easily without ruining all the lovely Lego creations.
Our new Reyes Coffee Table from The Brick has a storage drawer that’s perfect for all my girls’ Lego manuals.
It also has a lift top that is simple to pull up when we want to have a snack on the table! The modern rustic style and practical features of this coffee table make it a fabulous addition to our basement.
Another new feature I love in this space are these giant prints of my daughters on the wall. They measure a whopping 24″ by 36″, and they’re simply inexpensive engineering prints from my local copy shop! I framed them with simple black frames for an oversized gallery wall that I think works so well for this modern farmhouse aesthetic.
I always love how fresh, new pillow covers can add so much personality to a space, and I think these DIY pillows are so fun! (The rug is the Ahmar rug that we had in our living room – it looks great here too!)
I sewed some pillow covers with exposed gold zippers from deep blue velvet and a youthful pink & blue print and threw in a Mongolian Sheepskin Pillow for a bright mix of colours. I think these bold pillows help give this otherwise neutral space a more kid-friendly look!
We also added a DIY cables & pipe railing to the basement stairs that I think is such a great blend of modern and farmhouse. (Please check with your local building code on cable railings and decide if it’s right for your home & family.) A DIY newel post made of wood and MDF completes the look.
I had just enough leftover Stikwood from another project to clad the stair wall, and I LOVE how it echoes the plank-look barn doors of our Sydney Entertainment Unit!
Inexpensive fabric bins in our Sydney unit hide toys, puzzles and even dress-up clothes, and a couple of Lego creations and storage bins keep this room looking fun and playful!
I also love how our books arranged in rainbow order on our Stockbridge Bookcase make this space feel happy and colourful. We kept a couple of baskets of baby toys at the bottom of this shelf for any baby guests that need something to play with!
It feels SO good to finally have this space organized and looking stylish and comfy for my girls. I love how were were able to mix old, new and DIY to create a basement room that is both stylish and functional and that will suit my girls for years to come.
Best of all? They LOVE it, and I’m thrilled that they do!

Now tell me: What are your tips for organizing kids toys and the TV area?
Looks beautiful!! The furniture fit the space perfectly, your family must live this space!
I LOVE everything about this space, as always…great job, Mommy !!!
I love what you did to your basement, so beautiful!!! 🙂 I also love the floor tiles you have used! I will definitely save this for future reference, thank you for sharing this!
We love this unit! Is the Color a pure white or more of a cream or yellowish white? Also were you able to put it together yourself or did you have someone do it for you? We are buying it from our local Brick store but we are not sure if we (my hubby and I) are capable of doing the assembly ourselves.
It’s a bit of an off white. Christina didn’t have any issues putting it together 🙂
Your farmhouse basement makeover came out great! I love the barn doors on the entertainment center and those large pictures on the wall are perfect!
