Do you have a basement that needs a little love? Today, I’m excited to share my friend’s basement space transformation. This makeover took the room from cold and unfinished to cozy and chic! Come get some ideas for your own basement redo.
This was such a fun makeover, and I was so excited to do this for my friend Danielle. She’s a local teacher with three boys and her family definitely deserves this basement remodel!
This basement space was awkwardly shaped, dingy, and had many different purposes. It was a food storage space, her kid’s game room, a home office, and a seasonal storage space. So, the first step of this renovation project was to remodel the layout to create more purposeful living spaces. Then, we added hidden storage space and made the most out of the small square footage.
Modern Rustic Basement Makeover with Hidden Storage Ideas
My inspiration for the space was a cozy, modern rustic industrial space that could be used by guests, kids, and the homeowners too. So my mood board featured shades of black, white, and blue with warm wood-toned accents and cozy decor.
First up, I am sharing the living room/playroom makeover! For this remodel, we started by framing out a utility space and leaving a small, L-shaped area. Incidentally, one of my best small basement ideas is to turn small nooks like this L-shape space into a built-in office or craft space!
For the new office area, we installed a beautiful built-in desk that was the perfect warm hardwood tone. Then for storage we included a drawer unit underneath the desk and cabinetry above. I chose warm-toned brown office swivel chairs with cozy beige and blue pillows as accents. The space turned out to be a dream!
We remodeled the utility room to create a TV corner for movie-watching with a cozy sofa for relaxing and floor-to-ceiling storage on the long wall. I also added in some extra storage spaces for food, toys and seasonal decor, and tucked it away by the basement stairs with stylish doors.
The focal point of this space is the beautiful Italian leather Giorgia sofa that was kindly gifted from Sofa Land. I then added textured throw pillows, industrial-feel fixtures and furniture, and a splash of greenery! We also added some clever storage with an ottoman that turns into a tray table and barn doors for the storage space that blend with the rest of the space perfectly.
We also gave all of the zones for the new living space a fresh coat of paint. I used Sea Pearl for the wall colour, Chantilly Lace for the trim, and Blue Note for a gorgeous feature wall. All of these paints were from Benjamin Moore.

Basement Storage Closet to Tiny Bathroom!
Next up in my basement renovation reveal is this tiny basement bathroom! Before the makeover, the space was used for food storage but already had plumbing for a bathroom. So it made total sense to turn it into a proper bathroom as a perfect addition to the basement suite.
Like the main room, the bathroom was designed in a rustic, modern style with soft shades and sleek lines. The fresh coat of paint keeps the space light and feeling spacious, even when the door is closed. I just love how it turned out! The new bathroom now blends perfectly with the rest of the basement space and everything should be easy to maintain and clean. The wall hooks are kid-friendly and I also think the wood and stone tiles really add interest to the space.

Dated basement bedroom to cozy oasis!
Finally, the last part of the reveal is this cozy basement bedroom makeover!
The remodel of the bedroom was a total transformation. With the modern and cozy new colour scheme, refreshed carpet and functional furniture, it’s now such a cozy oasis.
We added floor to ceiling drapes and textiles to keep the bedroom feeling cozy but still allow for natural light in the bedroom during the day. They also look great with the deep blue feature wall that ties the theme of the room in with the rustic, modern basement space.
Then, I added some handy storage space to the bedroom using a bed with hidden storage underneath and some shelving on the wall! There’s also a desk area that will be a great spot for Danielle or her kids to do homework or play.
