One of the challenges owners of small homes face is optimizing storage in compact spaces, especially in the kitchen. In today’ blog post, I’ll explore creative and useful storage ideas that will help you make the most of your tiny home kitchen, allowing you to enjoy cooking and food preparation without feeling cramped. Let’s dig into some helpful tiny house kitchen storage ideas!
I love small homes; they have a special place in my heart. When we first bought our acreage, we lived in an 800 square foot garage until we had our third child. Last year, we renovated a 467 square foot tiny cottage on a lake that we’re now renting out for the summer. Living in tiny houses or small homes is a great way to save money on bills, lower the time spent on cleaning, and keep shopping in check. They do come with their downsides though, and one of them is lack of storage space.
The small kitchen in our Tiny Lake House is only 63 square feet in size, so I had to be creative with the storage solutions in this space. Let me give you a tour of some features we’ve added in this tiny kitchen to make it ultra-functional in a stylish way. I hope these ideas inspire you to add some clever kitchen storage ideas to your own home!

The Art of Tiny House Kitchen Storage
When it comes to maximizing space in a tiny house kitchen (or any small kitchen, really), every inch counts. By implementing a few clever storage solutions and making the best use of available space, you can create a functional, organized, and enjoyable cooking area.
1. Optimize Vertical Space with Open Shelving
One of the best ways to maximize storage in a tiny kitchen is to take advantage of vertical space. This is something I always recommend thinking about in any small room! Consider installing open shelving in your kitchen and run them from about 12 inches from the countertop to the ceiling. Here, you can store kitchen essentials you might use every day like drinking glasses, coffee mugs, wine glasses and bowls. This frees up valuable counter and cabinet space while keeping your kitchen essentials within easy reach. Vertical storage is king when trying to work within the confines of a tiny kitchen.
I often get asked about the dusting that would be required when storing drinkware and serving ware on open shelves. My solution? Simply ensure that the items you store on the shelves are ones that you use every day or almost every day. That way, they don’t even have a chance to collect dust!
2. Utilize Magnetic or Adhesive Storage Solutions
Magnetic storage is an ingenious way to keep your tiny kitchen clutter-free. Moveable, magnetic shelves, hooks and strips are the perfect addition to small spaces:
- Install a magnetic spice rack on the wall or side of the fridge. This one from Amazon fits my spice jars perfectly. The magnet is surprisingly strong and can hold up to 5 lbs worth of items!
- Hang adhesive hooks on the walls or on the sides of cupboards to hold dish towels, oven mitts, and kitchen utensils. Don’t forget to look to wall space for a valuable storage opportunity!
- Choose gadgets like a magnetic kitchen timer that can be stored on your range hood.
- These adhesive cord organizers can be attached to the backs of small appliances. You can wrap the cord around the organizer to keep your counters looking neat and tidy.
3. Optimize Your Sink Area
Make the most of the area around your sink with these clever ideas:
- Use an over-the-sink cutting board to create additional counter space.
- Buy a drying rack that can fit in your sink and then roll up to free up counter space.
- A workstation sink like the one I have here in our Tiny Lake House has built-in storage. It comes with a cutting board, strainer and draining rack that all fit nicely into the grooves in the side of the sink.
4. Get Creative with Cabinet and Drawer Organization
Maximize your cabinet and drawer storage with these innovative solutions:
- Use adjustable dividers to create custom storage compartments in your drawers. I like these ones that have a spring-loaded adjustable end to fit multiple sizes of drawers.
- Install pull-out shelves or wire baskets inside cabinets for easy access to items. Tiny kitchens often don’t have a pantry, so easy-to-access hidden storage is key.
- Add a garbage bin and recycling bin into a pull-out cabinet under the sink. IKEA’s kitchen cabinets have this option and I love how it functions.
- For pots and pans, I prefer storing them in a drawer with an optional lid organizer so it’s easy to find everything.
5. Streamline Cooking with Space-Saving Appliances
Choose compact and multi-functional appliances that save space and simplify cooking:
- Choose small scale appliances like this 24″ stove and 24″ fridge I found by Unique Appliances
- Select a compact dishwasher or dish-drying rack that fits your tiny kitchen layout.
- Go tiny with your smaller appliances. I love this Dash mini waffle maker because it doesn’t require any extra storage; it can fit almost anywhere! It also matches my mint green appliances perfectly.
