One of the first things I recommend to people when they’re starting a room makeover is to create a Board on Pinterest. Start Pinning photos of rooms that you love to inspire your own makeover and nail down things like decor style, paint colour, furniture choices etc.
Home decor stores
High end stores like Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel etc. can offer great inspiration for your own DIY & decor projects. If you can’t afford their items, you can upcycle or DIY something inspired by a higher end piece. I’ve also found lots of inspiration at budget-friendly home stores like IKEA.
History
I’m a sucker for historical architecture and design, so I’m often inspired by photos or movies when creating DIYs or decorating my home. Our home is reminiscent of an early 20th century four square style home, so I like to include interior elements that make a nod to that time period.
Nature
You can’t go wrong with letting nature lead your DIY & decorating projects! When designing our lake house rental, I took a queue from the colours and textures of the lake and surrounding landscape and wildlife. Golds, blues, and even duck-themed accessories grace the home and truly tie in with the landscape. Adding natural elements to your home inspired by your setting always works!
Practical needs
One of my favourite ways to be inspired is to have a need and use my creativity to meet it. For example, in our narrow entry we always had an issue with shoes all over the floor. I created a built-in looking storage solution with IKEA cabinets and trim to hide all our shoes, but still leave enough room to walk through. (Check out the full tutorial for this project right here!) Have a practical need and using troubleshooting skills can be an inspiration in itself!
A note on using another creator’s work to inspire your own
If you’re using another person’s creation to inspire your own – and sharing yours online – always make sure to credit the original creator with a tag, a link, and/or a mention. Use your own creativity to ensure that your creation isn’t an exact copy of the inspiration!
