Transform your small bathroom into a gorgeous space! You spend a lot of time in your bathroom, so you want it to feel fresh, clean and functional. The good news is that remodelling doesn’t need to be expensive and there are plenty of ways you can style and give life to even small spaces.
Here are some of my favourite small bathroom remodel ideas that I hope will inspire and help you with your renovation!
Create Clever Wall Storage Solutions
In small spaces, having clever storage solutions is a must! One of my favourite features of the powder room in our renovated DIY house is the above-toilet shelving. We hung IKEA open shelves and used wicker baskets to conceal things like toilet paper and hair supplies. I love how they are functional for storage and give a ‘finished’ feel to the room. You can take a look at how I did it here.
Vanities on a Budget
Transform a Small IKEA Vanity with Paint
Turn a simple IKEA vanity into your statement piece with ease!
Our Little Lake House bathroom was run-down and water-damaged, so when we finally got around to renovating it I was so excited. Our vision was to create a modern, coastal feel. I really wanted a blue vanity to complete the look but didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it. So, to stay within our budget, I painted this IKEA Hemnes vanity a deep blue color (Observatory by Behr). I added some modern gold knobs and honestly, I couldn’t be happier with the designer bathroom look it creates!
Choose a Functional Vanity
Color and style aside, there are a few other things to think of when picking the perfect vanity for your space! In small bathrooms I am a big fan of a closed vanity. Even though I do love the look of an open bottom vanity, having doors and drawers like this one allows for more storage and organization.
Don’t be scared to think outside the box either! If you haven’t been able to find the right vanity for your space, why not look at IKEA kitchen cabinets? This is a cost effective and easily customizable way to get exactly what you want. My parents did this in their home renovation and we all love it! Create the Illusion of Space
Start with a Light Color Palette
Color not only gives a room personality, but it can also create the illusion of space in bathrooms with small square footage! When we renovated our kids’ bathroom we wanted to create something bright and happy. By choosing fresh, light colors we achieved this look and also gave the room a larger feel. In this bathroom we also lengthened the shower curtain so we could mount it close to the ceiling to give the impression of height. Another great, cost effective hack!
Like lighting and paint, tile choice is also a great way to create an illusion of space in your small bathroom. One of my favourite features in our Little Lake House bathroom renovation is the floor to ceiling marble tiles. They elevate the space and give a clean, light look that feels more spacious.
Natural light as well as carefully chosen light fixtures can also brighten up your bathroom and create a larger, more luxurious feel – even in tiny bathrooms! This gorgeous cottage spa primary bathroom reveal is full of inspiration and small bathroom remodel ideas.
Make the Room Feel Bigger with a Clear Door
A clear shower door not only offers a modern, classic look to your bathroom, but also makes the room feel bigger! If you have a small space to work with, a clear glass shower door is a great way to transform your bathroom without blowing your budget. See how we did it in our Little Lake House here.
Use Storage Solutions for Small Spaces
In small bathrooms, it can be a battle between floor space and storage space! But there are some great solutions you can use to have the best of both worlds.
In our Little Lake House bathroom, we used a simple bench from IKEA that doubled as a space for storage and a place to sit. We also placed towel hooks above it, to give more storage options and give the area a finished look.
Another one of my small bathroom remodel ideas is to use an IKEA rack under the bottom of your bathroom mirror frame. This is an inexpensive hack that allows you to hang buckets that will store your bathroom essentials within easy reach. In our kids’ bathroom, these buckets are used to store toothbrushes, flushable wipes, hair brushes, and accessories. I like this system for their bathroom, as it keeps clutter off the countertop – and the buckets don’t seem to travel around the surface of the counter like the jars and other storage solutions we have tried in the past.
Try These Organization Hacks for Small Bathrooms on a Budget
A little goes a long way when it comes to creating more organization in small bathrooms! When it was time to spring clean our powder room I took a quick trip to the dollar store. I was able to find some great, inexpensive items that were both functional and stylish.
One of the things I grabbed was some drawer organizers and trays. These are readily available in most stores and make a lot of difference to the storage of all your little bathroom items! Just make sure to measure your drawers before you go looking.
Another great idea is to use kitchen canisters either on open shelves or as organizers in your drawers and vanity. I love using mine to store essentials like cotton buds and Q-Tips.
Wire or wicker baskets are also fantastic tools which you can use to separate and store your bathroom things. Baskets with holes or gaps are a great trick for storing your more awkwardly shaped items, like your curling iron!
I love using soap dispensers and trays as styling pieces but they are also great for functionality in the bathroom. The dollar store usually has a range of options, so I am sure you will be able to find a piece to match your vision for your bathroom!
Similarly, cloches can work as both a great decorative and organizational item in the bathroom. In my bathroom, I used some ceramic bunnies and a faux birds’ nest for a very springy feel!
DIY Decor Ideas on a Budget
Interior design is not just for professionals! With these small bathroom design ideas you can create a gorgeous space with ease and without breaking the bank.
In our kids’ bathroom, I wanted to create some unique art pieces to add to the cheerful feel I was going for. I decided to create fun, practical printables that can easily be framed and placed in any space. You can download the FREE printable here.
A great way to stay within budget but create elegance with decor is to restore antique pieces. My mom refinished an antique side table by stripping and white washing it, making it into the perfect tub side table. For their bathroom remodel we also found a soft capiz shell light fixture from our local Habit for Humanity Restore, which is a gorgeous touch.
Mirrors can also be great as decor while also providing functionality! In the kids’ bathroom remodel I took a cheap mirror and made a DIY frame that was perfect for our design concept.
You can also find some great mirrors at a reasonable price at IKEA. The one we found for our Modern Coastal Bathroom at the Little Lake House is such a statement piece. It adds more texture to the room and ties in with our storage solutions!
