Make a Chunky Crochet Heart Banner

Valentine’s Day is one of our favourite holidays around here! Ever since they were little, my girls loved to decorate for it and celebrate it together as a family. We like to litter hearts everywhere, bake special treats, and my hubby always buys our girls special gifts to express his love for them. It’s the cutest thing EVER! Five years ago, I crocheted an adorable mini hearts banner which I still use to this day. You can find that project here. This year, I thought I’d recreate the banner with extra chunky yarn to give it a whole different look. And you can’t have to many heart banners to decorate with, am I right?! Come learn how to make a sweet chunky heart banner, and then make sure to pop down to the bottom of this post to see 30 more beautiful Valentine’s Day DIY ideas from my Canadian blogging friends!
This little banner is pretty quick to whip up (each heart took me about 5 minutes to crochet), and it’s a great beginner’s crochet project.
You could use the hearts as-is for Valentines decor or coffee coasters, or string them together for a sweet banner like I did.
Here’s the pattern to make this chunky crochet hearts banner:
(If you’re a beginner with crochet, I recommend you watch my YouTube video below to see the step-by-step directions.)
Make a magic loop.
Chain 3.
Into loop:
Triple crochet 2.
Double crochet 3.

Pull yarn end of loop to close magic loop.
Slip stitch through center of heart (loop).
Cut yarn, and pull ends through to back of heart.
Weave ends into back of heart and trim.
To make a banner, make 7 or more hearts. Cut a long piece of extra yarn, and pull it from the back to the front through the left top side of one heart. Then, pull it from the front to the back on the right top side of the heart. Repeat until you’ve strung all of the hearts on the yarn.

What size of hook did you use? In the video you said a P 16. Did you mean a Q (which is 16mm)?
Mine says “P16 – 11.5mm”
Adorable! Great way to use up some leftover yarn from another project. And I love how these pink hearts look hung across the white headboard.

Ah man, that banner is to die for, but to be honest what captured my eye was the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ throw pillows. They are so sweet and they have totally inspired me to get my vinyl cutter out to give it a whirl!! So cute!! I have done some crocheting before, but not sure I have the patient to make the banner! Cute though 🙂
Thanks, Samantha!
