Learn how to make a warm & cozy looking chunky knit hat and mittens with this free knitting pattern. These are quick to knit, a wonderful project to take on if you’re relatively new to knitting, and they also make lovely Christmas gifts!

I’ve recently re-found my love of knitting. 10 years ago I used to knit obsessively, but since I’ve had kids (and a blog, and a YouTube channel etc!) I haven’t been able to find the time. Now that the kids are a wee bit older, I’ve picked the craft up again and remembered how calming and stress relieving it is. It helps me relax, stop scrolling through my phone mindlessly, and I love all the things I can make! (Check out my Instagram account to see some of my recent sweater knits, and I also knit the one pictured using a We Are Knitters kit.)

Inspired by the chunky knit hats and mittens I’ve been seeing in stores this Fall, I created these super-duper easy knitting patterns to share with you today. These patterns will create a hat and mittens set to fit most women, and I’ll try to expand the pattern for men and kids one day soon too if there’s interest. I’m definitely making the hats for most of my family and friends this Christmas, so if any of you are reading this I hope you’re not sad that you won’t be surprised!

The patterns are below, and I’ll also embed some helpful YouTube videos featuring some knitting basics from some of my favourite knitters there. I think learning to knit via video is a great way to get started, or refresh your skills!

Chunky Knit Hat

Yield: 1 medium womens winter hat

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Active Time: 2 hours

Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes

Difficulty: Intermediate

This chunky hat is warm and cozy, features a faux fur pom-pom, and it's quick to make!

Print

Materials

• 1 skein bulky weight yarn (category 6)
• 10 mm double pointed needles OR 10 mm circular needles
• faux fur pom-pom
• thread

Tools

• scissors
• tapestry needle
• sewing needle

Instructions

Cast on 40 stitches and join in the round (you can use the invisible join technique that I link to below).

Rounds 1-8: *K1, P1, repeat from * around.

Rounds 5-28: K all stitches in the round.

Round 29 & 30: *K2tog, repeat from * around.

Round 31: *K2tog, repeat from * around.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it through the remaining loops with a tapestry needle. Knot it to secure.

Weave in all the ends.

Decide if the hat will be worn with the knit or purl side facing out (the purl side facing out is shown here), and then secure a faux fur pom-pom with a sewing needle and thread to the top of the hat.

K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together

Chunky Knit Mittens

Yield: 1 pair womens mittens

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Active Time: 4 hours

Total Time: 4 hours 5 minutes

These chunky knit mittens are warm and cozy, and quick to knit!

Materials

• 1 skein chunky yarn (size 6 weight)
• 6.5 mm double pointed needles
• 12" piece of scrap yarn in a contrasting colour

Tools

• tapestry needle

Instructions

Cast on 22 stitches. Join in the round.

Row 1-12: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end of round.

Row 13-20: K to end of round.

RIGHT MITTEN Row 21: drop working yarn,K4 with scrap yarn, turn work and P4 with scrap yarn, pick up main yarn again and K to end of round. You've created a placeholder for your thumb.

LEFT MITTEN Row 21: K until 4 stitches left on round, drop working yarn,K4 with scrap yarn, turn work and P4 with scrap yarn, pick up main yarn again to continue to row 22. You've created a placeholder for your thumb.

Row 22-39: K to end of round.

Row 40 & 41: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.

Row 42: *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail, and thread the yearn through the remaining loops with a tapestry needle. Tie to secure.

Knitting the thumb:

Place the 4 stitches of the main yarn under the scrap yarn placeholder onto a double pointed needle. Place the 4 stitches of the main yarn on top of the scrap yarn placeholder onto a double pointed needle. You can now remove the scrap yarn, or remove it later.

Row 1-10: K to end of round.

Row 11 & 12: *K2tog, repeat from * to end of round.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail, and thread the yearn through the remaining loops with a tapestry needle. Tie to secure.

Weave in all ends.

Create both a right and left mitten.

These can be worn with the knit or purl (as shown) side out.
