If you love to DIY, these are the best power tools for beginners! I’m sharing my personal favourite power tools for home DIY projects, in which order I think you should buy them, and a quick overview of each. Let’s go!

I have three power tools that I absolutely love and that have helped me do more involved DIYs over the years. You can start with my first recommendation, and then build you power tool library as you feel comfortable.

Must have power tools for DIY
Best drill for beginners
My favourite drill is the RYOBI P1814 18-Volt ONE+ Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill/Driver Kit because it’s easy to use and has a compact design. You can swap the battery out with any of the Ryobi One+ tools. Sean, my contractor husband, has a favourite drill set as well: the Bosch Power Tools Drill Kit – CLPK22-120, BC330. I love using these ones too! They’re also compact and lightweight.
Best finishing nailer for beginners
After you’re comfortable using a drill, I’d recommend buying a finishing nailer. This will allow you to nail trim to walls for feature wall builds, attach casing and baseboards, and do smaller builds with 1×2’s.
The Ryobi P325 One+ 18V Lithium Ion Battery Powered Cordless 16 Gauge Finish Nailer is my favourite because you can swap the battery with the Ryobi drill, it’s straightforward to use, and I find it’s simple to add the brad nails.
With these two tools – a drill and a finish nailer – you can build a lot of amazing DIYs. Pair these with a Miter Box Backsaw, and you can do all kinds of trim work and DIYs in your home. However, if you’re ready to take the next step and try a power saw, here’s my suggestion:
Best miter saw for beginners
A compound miter saw will allow you to cut lumber, dowels and even sticks for your many crafts and DIYs. You can adjust the angle on the saw to cut miters for corners. My favourite saw is the RYOBI 18-Volt ONE+ Cordless 7-1/4 in. Compound Miter Saw because it’s small and portable. I’m usually cutting smaller pieces of wood, so it’s sufficient for my needs. If you’re venturing into projects that require lumber that’s bigger than a 2×4, I’d recommend getting a larger miter saw.
Safely using power tools
Once you purchase your power tools, it’s important to read the manual they come with from start to finish. Ask someone who is familiar with the tool to help you use it the first time. With practice, these tools can take your DIYs to a whole new level!
