A Black & Blush Pink Living Room + DIY Pom Pom Heart Pillow

The fun thing about having neutral painted walls and furniture is that I can constantly play with accessories in our home. Changing up our pillows, throws and small decor items can completely change the look of our home decor, and it’s so easy and inexpensive! I recently felt like adding a little pink into our living room decor after seeing this blush pink, white and black breakfast nook. I really love a splash of pink for both Valentine’s Day and Spring! Here are some simple changes that I made to our living room, and I’ll show you how to make the sweetest DIY pom-pom heart Valentine pillow too.

Here’s our new living room look – all blush-y and coral-ly for Valentine’s Day. Don’t the splashes of pink make your bland winter heart suddenly happy? If you’re a home decor lover like me and enjoy experimenting with different colour combos, I’d highly recommend opting for neutral furniture like we’ve done.

Not only are these lovely, deep charcoal leather couches durable and easy to clean (believe me, they get coloured on and eaten on by three little girls daily), they’re a nice neutral colour that can be played with.

Lots of people have asked me lately how I like our leather sofas from The Brick and how they’ve held up in our home. So far, we all are really happy with them! They are comfy enough for my hubby to lay on after a long day at work, but they’re small and narrow enough that we can comfortably fit the pair in our living room and my smaller framed girls and I can sit easily in them too. The dark leather is really great for our messy family, but the tufted cushions and tailored look of the frame make these couches a lot more stylish than your standard leather furniture. They get a big thumbs up from all of us, and you can’t beat the price. Check out The Brick’s latest sale: Save 60% off this “It Fits” sofa when you buy the matching loveseat or chair!

Remember my colourful winter living room look with lots of shades of blue? This one for February is such a different look and all I’ve done is changed the pillows, throws, added some inexpensive accessories, and moved a few things around.

I swapped our sitting room and living room pillows – I wanted to see how my DIY floral pillows and coral pillows looked in here and I love them with the charcoal sofas! It’s such a neat contrast of feminine and masculine elements, and so romantic looking for Valentine’s Day.

I also moved our DIY art from the bathroom down here for fun, and slid the Instagram door over to the corner.

The only things I actually purchased for this little room refresh were some inexpensive faux florals in blush pink and a pretty, light throw in coral. I really like how a room looks that’s mostly neutral with 3-5 bursts of colour. Try that formula – it really works!

In our living room, all of the more expensive and harder-to-change things are neutral: the sofas, the rug, the wall colour and the fireplace. Then, I kept all of the accessories neutral as well (mine are in the black, grey and white family) except for the coral or pink things. Here, they’re the coral throw, the faux flowers, a couple cushions and the roses on the DIY wreath.

I think it’s just enough colour to make a statement and not have to break the bank every time you want a seasonal change.

And don’t forget about DIYing accessories to save some cash too! One of my favourite things in this room right now is this handmade pom-pom and dropcloth heart pillow. Here’s how to make one.

DIY Pom-Pom & Drop Cloth Heart Pillow

Materials:

  • drop cloth
  • needle & thread
  • sewing machine
  • pom-pom trim
  • pins
  • pillow form

Directions:

Cut two squares of drop cloth that are the same dimensions as your pillow form. My pillow form was 20″ square, so I made my drop cloth pieces the same dimensions. I like to make my pillow covers slightly smaller than my pillow forms (after you sew them, they’ll be smaller by an inch) to give my cushions more fullness.

Trace a heart shape onto one of the dropcloth squares. Lucky me – I had the perfectly sized cake pan to trace!

Pin some pom-pom trim into place using the heart tracing as a guide. Sew the trim down to the drop cloth using a sewing machine.

Place the fabric right sides together, and then sew around the perimeter of your cushion cover, leaving a hole that’s about 6″ long.

Turn the cover right side out, stuff your pillow form inside, and then hand sew the opening shut.

Your sweet and festive pillow is now complete!

I’ll often sew my pillow covers this way when I’m in a rush or want a quick change. I’ll wash them all as one piece, or do like my mom does – she’ll take the covers off seasonally by seam-ripping the hand sewn opening. When she wants the pillow covers back on, she’ll re-sew the opening shut. Whatever works for you!

Happy February! I hope you enjoy a love-filled month with your family and friends.

  2. What is that charcoal gray sofa called from “The Brick”. I really like the style and it would look nice to mix with what we already have but can’t find it on their website. Thanks, love your site!
