Learn how to sew a cozy and luxurious faux fur throw blanket with this simple step-by-step tutorial! This gorgeous DIY faux fur blanket would be a wonderful addition to your Fall and Winter home decor.
I love a good, fuzzy blanket and this one is the SOFTEST! I recently made it for our living room refresh this month, and it’s one of my favourite DIY blankets ever.
Making a luxurious faux fur blanket like this isn’t that hard, either. It’s a good project for a beginner seamstress, and all you’ll need is a basic sewing machine (nothing fancy!).
I used this Lux Fur fabric and this Soft Minky fabric from Fabric.com, and purchased 1 1/2 yards of each to make a 47 x 53″ small throw blanket.
A common throw blanket size is 50 x 60 inches, but you can make your blanket smaller like I did for mine if you want to make it a little more budget friendly. Alternatively, you could make a 36 x 48″ “lapghan” sized blanket or an even smaller blanket for a different look and function. It’s completely up to you!
Watch my YouTube video tutorial below to learn how to make this luxurious DIY faux fur blanket, or follow the instructions below:
Materials:
- 1 1/2 yards faux fur fabric
- 1 1/2 yards minky fabric (for the back)
- needle & thread
- hard & soft rulers
- Sharpie
- stick pins
- sewing machine
Directions:
Use a measuring tape, hard ruler & Sharpie to make marks on the revers side of the faux fabric to mark how big you want your throw blanket to be. Keep in mind that you’ll be using 1/2″ seam allowances, so the blanket will end up 1″ smaller widthwise and lengthwise.
Cut the fabric to size using sharp fabric scissors. Try to cut only the backing and not the faux fur by carefully sliding your scissors through the fur and taking small, careful snips of the backing.
Lay the faux fur fabric right-side-down onto the minky fabric, right-side-up. Straighten and then pin the fabrics together with stick pins. Cut the minky fabric to the same size as the faux fur fabric.
Keeping the stick pins in place, sew around the perimeter of the fabrics, sewing them together with a 1/2″ seam allowance and a long-length stitch. Leave a 12″ opening and backstitch on either side of it. Cut the corners of the seam allowances on a diagonal to reduce the bulk in the corners of the blanket.
Turn the blanket right-side-out, and then handstitch the opening shut using a needle and a thread. I like to use an invisible stitch by folding the fabrics towards eachother and catching about a 1/2″ of each fabric from each side as I go along (see the video for the technique). Finish the hand stitching with a tight knot.
You’ll all done! Enjoy cuddling your extra cozy blanket this season!

I love the blanket throw and I’m very impressed with the look of it. I generally buy a lot of fabric from fabric .com. They seem to have a good selection. It’s not too often I see a blog where someone around your age actually sews…lol….it makes my heart happy!
OMG I love this so much! Gorgeous! Make in home too. I am not creative as much as you but i will try this out. Looks like very useful in winter.
Where did you find the faux fur fabric?
I purchased my fabric from fabric.dot
I love a cozy faux fur blanket for our cold winters here in Alberta. They can be pricey but I never thought to make one until seeing yours. This is definitely happening in my house! Thanks for the tutorial 🙂
Thank you for posting this. I have been looking at these online but with your instructions I will make my own. I have one question, why did you cut the fabric to 48″, why not use the entire 1.5 yards? Just curious as to your reasoning. Thanks.
