What are cocoa bombs?
Cocoa balls are a confection made popular on TikTok this Fall. I had first seen them on Hebah Bukhari’s account (@bukhaaar_), and I was instantly intrigued! A hot chocolate ball is a hollow chocolate sphere filled with hot chocolate mix, marshmallows and other mix-ins that you can place in a mug.
When very hot milk or water is poured over the cocoa ball, the ball explodes and a delicious hot chocolate drink is created. What a fun way to make hot chocolate!
DIY hot cocoa balls with marshmallows
After seeing these treats on TikTok, I knew I wanted to try making them to give as gifts this Christmas. I gave them my own spin with different flavours of hot chocolate mix, dehydrated marshmallows and toppings. They’re actually not as hard to make as you might think, and they only require a few budget-friendly supplies.

Cocoa Balls Supplies
To make DIY cocoa balls you’ll need:
- sphere silicone mold
- 2 cups milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
- dehydrated marshmallows
- hot chocolate mix (you can use a bulk mix or a fun pink unicorn mix like this one)
- any other mix-ins or toppers you might like to add
Hot Chocolate Balls Recipe
Makes 5 large cocoa balls.
Melt 2 cups of chocolate chips in a double boiler.
Spread the melted chocolate into the spherical molds, making sure the chocolate goes all the way up the sides of each mold.
Freeze the molds for a few hours until the chocolate hardens. Remove the chocolate from the molds.
Fill half (5) of the chocolate halves each with 2 Tbsp hot chocolate mix and 1 Tbsp dehydrated marshmallows. You can also add any mix-ins here that you’d like.
Melt the edge of one of the remaining chocolate halves in a warm saucepan, and then attach it to one of the filled chocolate halves to create a sphere. Repeat with the remaining cocoa balls.
If you’d like, you can melt a contrasting color of chocolate chips in a double boiler and drizzle that on top of your hot chocolate balls. Finish with a sprinkle of crushed candy canes.
To enjoy these, heat up some milk to very hot, and then pour some over a cocoa ball in a large mug. The hot chocolate ball will melt and the marshmallows and hot chocolate mix will fill the cup.
To gift these, wrap them in tin foil or place them in a gift box and wrap with cellophane.
