Modern Coastal Bathroom Renovation on a Budget | Our Little Lake House

Come see how we renovated a small and water-damaged bathroom into a modern coastal bathroom on a budget!
Last Fall, we purchased a run-down lakefront home last Fall. You can read more about it here and how we had to demolish it right down to the studs.
We’re making over each room one-by-one with the help of some sponsors and friends collaborating with us. First on our list was the main bedroom:

Next, we’re renovating the one small bathroom in the home. Since it’s the only bathroom, we decided to keep the tub to make the room more versatile, and we’re using tiles my husband Sean already had in his inventory to save money.
Sean suspected water damage in the bathroom by how it smelled and looked behind the access door of the tub. But when he ripped down the drywall in the room, we were surprised and disgusted to find not only water damage, but damage from rodents in all the walls. Sean had to re-frame the walls, and then we had the entire home professionally spray foam insulated.
After we fixed this massive issue, we were ready to renovate this small bathroom!

PRODUCT SOURCES
- Shiplap & trim from Metrie (gifted)
- Shower trim, faucet, shower door, toilet & wall sconce from The Home Depot Canada
- Paint is Observatory & Ultra Pure White by BEHR
- Vanity, mirror & bench from IKEA
- Tiles are old, but you can find similar ones at Home Depot
- Hooks & towels from Amazon
I used the marble & faux marble tiles Sean had on hand as the basis for my spa-like modern coastal bathroom design in whites and blue.
The marble tiles give the bathroom a traditional look, and I love how they really elevate the space.
To give the room some coastal details, I also added Metrie shiplap to the ceiling and 2 of the walls.
I also used their gorgeous crown moulding, casing and door for the space and I love all the detail! Thanks for gifting these products to us, Metrie.
A simple bench from IKEA on one side of the bathroom acts as storage or a place to sit, and some black towel hooks on the wall also help with storage.
I wanted a blue vanity for the bathroom, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money for it. To get the look on a budget, I painted this IKEA Hemnes vanity a deep blue colour (Observatory by Behr) and added some modern gold knobs. I love how this piece turned out! The rattan mirror is also from IKEA and I like how it gives this space some texture.
Even though this was one of our most challenging renovations yet, I’m so pleased with how this small bathroom turned out.
Now tell me: What do you think of this modern coastal bathroom makeover? Stay tuned for the next room renovation in our Little Lake House!
Wonderful. I love the shiplap! This is an interesting combination with the tile!
What color of grout did you use? I’m using similar tile and am stuck on the grout! I don’t want something that will get dingy but also not something so dark it creates a grid pattern and takes away from the “veins”.
I used a dark grey grout that I had on hand.
Where can I buy the rattan mirror from? It is not in the ikea catalog. Thanks.
Where can I source the bath tub?
Thank you!
The bathtub came with the home.
How did you hang the mirror on the tile?
Great reno! What size was the bathroom?
The bathroom is just under 6 feet x 8 feet.
How did you get the floor tiles to look so shiny? Thank you.
