Take a plain wooden counter stool and turn it into an adorable, Scandi-inspired DIY faux fur stool for your home! This is a pretty accent for your winter decor, and it’s so easy to make.

One of my goals this year is to try to use more of what I already have on hand to make home decor and crafts. This sweet little stool was made with a dated counter stool I had, and I’m so happy with how it turned out!

It’s such a cozy little accent piece, and I love how it looks Scandinavian inspired. Want to make one?

How to upcycle a wooden counter stool into a DIY faux fur stool:

First, find a plain wooden counter-height stool at a garage sale, thrift store, or discount store. I was lucky to have 4 of these on hand. (They came with a little investment property we just bought… more on that SOON! If you follow my YouTube channel, you may already know what I’m talking about!)

Next, mark the stool legs at about 14″ from the base of the stool top. I used painter’s tape to mark my stool. Make sure your marking is parallel with where the stool will sit on the floor. Cut the stool legs at this mark with a hand saw or power saw.

After cutting, sand the bottom of the stool legs with a hand or power sander. You can test how evenly the stool sits as you go, and sand a leg or two more than the others if needed.

Now, you can sand and paint the entire stool as desired. I made a white-wash with 1 part latex paint and 1 part water. I brushed it on the stool, and then wiped it off with a towel to create a beachy, aged look.

Upholstering the stool

Next, remove any old upholster from the top of the stool and retain the foam. Trace the top of the stool onto some faux fur fabric, add about 2″ to the circle, and cut.

Now, place the faux fur fabric on a flat surface, then the foam, and then the stool. Using a staple gun, wrap the faux fur fabric around to the bottom of the stool and staple it in place.

You’ll all done! Isn’t this cute?! I love that it gives me wintery, Scandinavian vibes and that it was upcycled from something I already had on hand.

It’s not hard to create at all, and it’s such a lovely accent in a cozy winter living room. It would also be sweet in a child’s bedroom!

For a cozy winter look in January, try mixing faux fur accessories like this stool with blankets and pillows. Add a few twinkle lights, rustic elements like branches, and leftover greenery from Christmas. It’s a cozy look that transitions nicely from Winter to Spring!
