Now, let’s get into my DIY idea!

How to make a textured vase with DIY plaster paint

First, find an old vase that you’d like to upcycle. I thought this one was perfect because it’s large and smooth, so additional texture would be a great feature!

Next, create your own plaster paint by mixing one part latex paint with one part Plaster of Paris. I’ve also seen people mix in baking soda, but I had Plaster of Paris on hand. It gives this paint even more texture and body!

Paint your vase with one coat of the DIY plaster paint. Once that’s dry, paint another thick coat.

You can add texture by using a stencil brush or chalk paint brush to dab the paint onto your vase.

Once the plaster paint is dry, you can dry brush a slightly darker paint over your vase to highlight the texture. I used some light grey paint, put it on a paper towel, and applied a small amount to my paint brush. Then, I lightly and quickly brushed the paint all over the vase.

You’re all done! Isn’t this pretty? This DIY textured vase reminds me of something you might find at a high end store, and it didn’t cost me anything to make!

Materials

• Old vase that you'd like to upcycle
• Latex paint (white and a darker colour of your choice)
• Plaster of Paris

Tools

• Paint brush
• Stencil brush or chalk paint brush (optional)

Instructions

1. Create your own plaster paint by mixing one part white latex paint with one part Plaster of Paris.
2. Paint your vase with one coat of the DIY plaster paint.
3. Once that's dry, paint another thick coat.
4. You can add even more texture by using a stencil brush or chalk paint brush to dab the paint onto your vase.
5. Once the plaster paint is dry, you can dry brush a slightly darker paint over your vase to highlight the texture. I used some light grey paint. Put it on a paper towel, and apply a small amount to your paint brush. Then, lightly and quickly brush the paint all over the vase.
