I love being able to use scraps of supplies I have on hand to make pretty things for my home, and these scrap fabric tea towels are such a great project to try! You don’t need to know how to sew to make these ruffled towels, and these would also make a great gift.
Today’s blog post is in collaboration with some of my favourite blogging friends. After you check out my fabric DIY idea, make sure to visit their DIY fabric ideas linked at the bottom of this post!
How to make no-sew ruffled tea towels with scrap fabric
Begin by ripping 1 inch wide strips of fabric from a piece of scrap fabric you have on hand. The length doesn’t really matter because you’ll be able to hide any seams, but the longer the better! I cut a slit in my fabric at the 1″ wide mark with scissors, and then used my hands to tear the rest of the strip to create a textured look.
Next, find a plain white cotton flour sack tea towel and place a dab of fabric glue at the bottom right edge of the towel.
Then, place one end of the fabric strip onto the glue and press to hold. I lined up the bottom of my fabric strip with the top of my towel’s hem.
Every inch or so, you can create a pleat or ruffle, and tack the pleat down with a little dab of fabric glue.
Your pleated fabric strip will look something like this. I used a hard ruler as a guide over my pleated ruffle to make sure I made it relatively straight. If you run out of fabric, you can add a new strip of fabric by hiding its raw edge under the previous pleat.
After you’ve covered the entire edge of your towel, you can trim off any excess fabric and you’re done!
Such an easy craft, right?! I love how these turned out and they are so pretty for Spring.
