DIY Thrift Store Candle using a kitchen canister

If you’re looking for a unique gift or home decor item this season, making a DIY thrift store candle is a fun and satisfying project! The thrift store is always chock full of random vessels like kitchen canisters, so let me show you how to make a unique candle with a thrifted find.
When I found this adorable fluted kitchen canister at Value Village, I knew I had to use it for some kind of craft. It has a sweet little lid with a lemon on top, so it had to come home with me! Once I brought the canister home, I realized: this would be the perfect vessel for a Spring candle! Let me show you how you can make a DIY thrift store candle, too. (It’s easy!)
To begin, find an appropriate container at the thrift store. You might need to do a little research to make sure that it can withstand higher temperatures. (We’ll be pouring hot wax inside.)
Next, pour some soy wax flakes into a double boiler. I make a DIY double boiler by placing a heat resistant measuring cup into a boiling pot of water. The amount of flakes will depend on the size of your container, but you can use this guide to determine how much wax you’ll need.
Once the wax has melted completely, add in several drops of fragrance oil. I used a lemon scented oil.
Now, place a dab of hot glue on the bottom of a candle wick, and position it in the bottom center of your thrifted container.
Place a dowel or popsicle stick on top of the container, and wrap the rest of the wick around it. Now you can pour the melted wax carefully into your thrift store vessel.
Once your candle is completely cool and firm (I left mine overnight), you can trim the wick.
I love the idea of using a thrifted canister for a candle because it comes with its own adorable lid! I especially like the lemon on top of this one.
Now your DIY thrift store candle is all done! You can light it up and enjoy it as decor in your own home, or wrap it up and give it as a gift to someone special. So easy to make, right?
