Learn how to make a cute and welcoming DIY Fall doormat from a shower curtain and a foam mat from the dollar store!

I’ve always wanted to try making a mat with polyurethane and fabric, so when I found a gorgeous Fall shower curtain from Simons for only $10, I thought it would be the perfect candidate to turn into a Fall doormat! I started with this foam floor mat from Dollarama.

Next, I laid the mat over my Simons shower curtain and cut the curtain about 2″ larger than the mat.

Then I applied Varathane’s triple thick poly onto the smooth side of the foam mat with a foam brush.

I carefully smoothed the fabric over the mat as it started adhering with the polyurethane finish.

Then, I applied the Varathane to the edges of the fabric and pulled & folded them over the back of the mat.

I decided to tack down the corners with hot glue.

Next, I sealed the mat with another coat of the Varathane over the fabric with a foam brush.

Then, I wrote “hello” onto the mat when it was dry with a pencil and glued some twine in place with a glue gun over the pencil marks.

You could use darker twine to skip this step, but I did end up painting over the twine with a dark green paint to make the letters stand out better against the fabric.

All done! I love how this mat looks layered over my DIY dollar store twine rug at our front door.
