Making your own DIY throw pillow is a great way to add a personal touch to your home décor. And, if you use dollar store kitchen towels, it can be a very budget-friendly project. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to cut the towels, sew the pillow with a fringe detail, and stuff the pillow with a budget-friendly hack.
Watch how to make this DIY throw pillow in my dollar store DIY video:
How to make a DIY throw pillow from dollar store towels
First, you’ll need to gather your supplies. For this DIY throw pillow, you’ll need two dollar store kitchen towels ( found mine at Dollarama), fringed trim, scissors, thread, polyester fiberfill (or see my HACK for this, below!) and a sewing machine.
Next, you’ll want to cut the about 3 inches off the sides of the towels. This creates a long, lumbar pillow.
Then, pin a piece of trim to each short side of one of the pillow pieces. Make sure the trim is pinned on the RIGHT side of the fabric and facing inwards.
Sew the trim to the towel using a long basting stitch.
Now, it’s time to sew the pillow together. Place the two pieces of towel fabric right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a 6 inch opening for turning. Trim the excess fabric from the corners and turn the pillow right side out. Use a chopstick or other pointy object to help push out the corners.
Finally, stuff the pillow with polyester fiberfill and hand stitch the opening closed.
HACK: Save all of your old sleeping pillows! I reuse the filling for crafts just like this.
And that’s it! You now have a beautiful DIY throw pillow for your home.
