A Vintage Inspired Red & Aqua Laundry Room (+ Video Tour!)

I never thought I’d be this excited about a laundry room before, but I am seriously FREAKING OUT. I am so, so incredibly happy with how our laundry makeover turned out that I couldn’t wait to share it with you. It might sound silly, but I truly think that making this room a little prettier will give me the boost I need to keep up (better) with the piles and piles of little girl laundry that we have. This small laundry room makeover didn’t cost us much at all – we bought material for a giant pegboard and I purchased a couple pegboard accessories online. The rest of the transformation was due to a lot of elbow grease and a ton of DIY. I give you our vintage inspired red and aqua small laundry room:

Isn’t it the cutest little laundry room you ever did see?! It just makes me smile.

Here’s a look at how it was before:

It functioned just fine, but it was plain and bare. Plus, I really needed a bit more storage in the room and a better place to fold our clothes.

Now, it’s a lot more cheerful and there is a place for everything including a spot for me to fold our clothes.

Let me give you a little tour and tell you what we’ve done in here! If you prefer to watch a video tour, and to see my 5 tips on making the most of a small laundry room or utility space, you can watch my laundry room tour video right here:

In case you missed it, I shared a sneak peek of our laundry room makeover a little while ago along with how we made a counter top over our washer and dryer from an extra door we had. I’m still really liking how it works in here!

This wall on the left is what I think is the most exciting part of this room. My hubby helped me install this GIGANTIC 6 x 8 foot pegboard onto the wall to store cleaning tools, my iron, my ironing board (the DIY tutorial for the pretty ironing board cover is here), a drying rack, some baskets and buckets for odds & ends, some art, and some hanging laundry hampers.

I will share how we installed the pegboard in a separate post very soon!

I can’t say enough good things about these hanging laundry hampers. (I also used one for the kids’ bathroom upstairs.) They are so handy, and they save the valuable floor space in the laundry room. You can buy them here from Amazon.

I had originally planned for the pegboard to measure 6 x 6 feet, but since the pegboard comes in 8 foot long sheets, Hubby convinced me to make it 8 feet high. I’m really glad I did, because I’m using the entire pegboard and I don’t have to worry about reaching the high spots. I hung art up there, and I also hung my mop, broom and ironing board up high because I can grab them from below. It works great!

I also found these black wire pegboard baskets on Amazon, and you can buy them here. They’re great for holding my iron and some pretty decor and I love their industrial look.

I found some vintage artwork online and printed it off at home. I framed the art, and the frames hang from our pegboard with pegboard hooks.

Underneath the artwork is an old drying rack that I had and stained Ebony. The awesome thing is that when I attached it to the pegboard with hooks, it pulls out right from the wall so that I can use it on the wall!

I made a small shelf below by cutting and staining a 1 x 4″ piece of pine, and some inexpensive metal buckets hang below. I’m using all of the buckets and baskets to collect loose change and hold laundry supplies.

The cafe curtains are a DIY that I will also share soon. They were so easy to make, and I LOVE the fabric that I found from OnlineFabricStore.net!

I hung up an antique washboard I found at our local antique store, One Man’s Treasure, on the wall by the window.

Our washer and dryer have been here for almost two years now, I think, and their cherry red colour was what inspired the entire red + aqua scheme of this room.

These baskets were inexpensive ones from Walmart, and by some fluke they fit in this Ikea shelf perfectly. I LOVE when that happens; it’s so satisfying! I have lonely socks in them, as well as little construction supplies like hangers, screws, bolts, etc.

Opposite our pegboard wall and around the washer and dryer are these handy Ikea cupboards that we installed when we built Our DIY House. They’re great for storing less-pretty things like laundry detergent, linens, and presents I’m hiding from the kids.

I’m just thrilled with what some DIY and a small budget accomplished in our laundry room! Thanks, Hubby dearest, for showing me you love me by indulging in my massive pegboard fantasy.

Thank YOU for coming along with me on our small DIY laundry room tour today! I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you were able to take home some tips and ideas for your own laundry room or utility space that won’t cost you too much but will make your home more functional.

Now I’m off to fold some laundry!

  1. Oh. My. Goodness!!!! I LOVE IT! You did SUCH a great job, Christina! No wonder you’re so excited! It’s so cute, so functional, and so you!

If you’re wanting to replace that rug, I think the NIPPRIG rug from IKEA would look great in your space. I have two of them, and they are very comfortable to stand on and hide dirt incredibly well. Also, only $15! (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10296930/)

Seriously though, that is an AWESOME laundry room! I’m all inspired to work on mine now!

    1. Thanks, Sara! I’m SOOO happy with it, and happy that I could convince Sean to get this giant pegboard up… finally! 🙂 That rug is perfect. I feel an Ikea trip coming on. 😉

      1. I am so jealous of your red washer and dryer! They do not make them anymore ☹️. Thanks for the inspiration

  2. This laundry room would actually make me want to do laundry! For the cabinets, did you fit IKEA kitchen cabinets to make the configuration, or did you use the taller, pantry-like cabinets?
Love the door as countertop! Perfect upcycling project!

  3. You did a wonderful job in making your laundry room such an appealing place to do your washing and ironing. The pegboard is perfect to hang all of your necessities so decoratively. Enjoy your new re-do, it’s fantastic!

  4. Wow! Looks fantastic! How did you hang the peg board? It looks framed out as well, is that just a decorative touch? Thanks!

      1. This is the same size as my laundry room- even has the same window.
I too would like to know more about mounting the peg board Please share more info on doing the pegboard.

  5. I saw this space on home talk and had to come over and find out more. I love it! The door as a shelf is a great idea and I might have to do that on our laundry room. Also love the pegboard and shelves with baskets in between the w & d. Thanks for sharing. Oh. And what is that pretty paint color?

  6. This is amazing Christina! That peg board wall is so cool- functional and pretty all in one!! I love those hanging laundry baskets. And the door as a countertop is such a fun and eclectic idea. Perfect space!!

  7. Love your new laundry room! My favorite is the use of the door on the top of washer/dryer. Did you attach the door to the wall or is it just resting on top of washer/dryer.

  8. I have a few questions about the pegboard, because this is something I’m NEEDING to do!!!

    1. How did you assemble it? All one piece or multiple? And how did you add the frame around it?

    2. Where did you get your pegboard(s)?

  9. this is so cute! I have to say, having all of the pops of red, including appliances, iron, and broom is very fancy. I love how this space is functional and pretty. I am in the middle of redoing my laundry room and making a mudroom out of it too. It is coming together, but seeing yours all day makes me eager to get mine done. I can see the light now and want my shiny and new laundry room. Yes, it is sad how excited we get about laundry rooms. What is even more sad is how much time we spend in them. We should have a couch in there or something. At least a mini fridge for cold water 🙂

  10. This is my favorite color combination EVER in the room that is used to do my least favorite job EVER.. I feel so conflicted! Really, beautiful job. I love the color combination, as we covered, but I love all of the vintage accents, especially that floral ironing board cover! Fantastic! Pinning!

  11. Wow. Love it. Would you tell me how large your laundry room is? Mine is tiny and I’m wondering if I’ll be able to fill all this wonderful in mine.

      1. That’s perfect. Mine is 8′ x 6.5′. Also love the color on the wall. Do you remember the brand and name of the paint?

  12. Such an inspiring website! Can you please tell me what brand and colour of paint you used in your laundry room and front room? The blue is lovely. Thankyou!

  13. Hello there.

I’m just dropping by your page and was I glad I did! 🙂
Congratulations for the brilliant makeover! I love the giant pegboard! Makes me wanna hang one in my laundry room right now..lol!

The shelves in between the washing machine and the dryer is awesome.
An idea just came to my mind now for the counter top. Would it be nice if you could convert it to an ironing board too? Rather than having to take it from the pegboard each time you need to use it and hanging it back when you are done. It’s just a thought.

    Love your taste for colors!

    Well done Christina 🙂

  14. Hello! Just ran into your site…just lovely. I have a question regarding the “table top” in the laundry. Is that a door? I absolutely love the idea and have been scouring the internet for an idea just like this. Thank you for posting! Love it!

  15. Lovely laudnry room. Almost makes it tolerable to do laundry 🙂 Do you remember the name of the Ikea cabinets you used and the name of the Ikea shelf you have between the washer/dryer. I need to copy this and you know imitate is sincerest form of flattery.

  16. What an awesome laundry room!! Could you please tell me where you purchased the hanging laundry bags and the gorgeous white metal containers with the white lacy metal border (one is inside the black basket on the pegboard)?

  17. Hi Christina

I love your laundry room …..could you tell me where you found the small shelf that is in between your appliances where you are storing the little baskets ?

  18. Hey Christina, the link to Online Fabric Store is broken. Here’s even better content to link too [https://www.fr-one.com/en/products/gossian/gwendoline/01-blossom-60488?imageType=FlatShot]. ^_^

  19. Do both remember what IKEA shelf is in between the washer & dryer & which Walmart baskets are on the shelf?
