Get some ideas on how to decorate your bedroom for Spring without buying anything as I share some DIY boho inspired updates I gave our master bedroom this season.

I still love our rustic farmhouse bedroom that we renovated in 2016, but it’s fun to give it seasonal updates every now and then. (Curious to see how I made over this room in 2016? Click here!)

This Spring has been unique. Because of our current situation, I can’t go out to shop for anything new. That didn’t stop me from giving our master bedroom a Spring refresh, though!

I think it’s a fun challenge to decorate a space without spending a dime, so here are some things I did to our bedroom to give it a $0 refresh for the new season.

DIY rustic wood bench from lumber scraps

When I found some scrap 2×6’s and a 2×4 in my studio, I challenged myself to build a rustic bench for the end of our bed, and I love how it turned out. It was so easy to build, and staining it with stain I already had on hand made it look like a real piece of furniture and not like it’s made of wall studs!

If you’d like to build one of these simple benches too, please let me know in the comments and I can put together a dedicated blog post with the step-by-step simple DIY bench tutorial.

I love how this bench matches our current bedside cabinets!

Handmade lumbar pillow from extra fabric

I’ve always wanted an extra large lumbar pillow for our king sized bed, so with some extra fabric I had on hand and a DIY tassel banner I had made previously, I went ahead and made one!

This pillow measures about 18″ x 38″ which is a nice size for a king sized bed. I like how it looks with all our simple white linens on the bed, and the side tassels give it extra texture.

Light fixture DIY macrame accents

Because I wanted to give our bedroom a little more casual, boho flair this Spring, I added some macrame detail to our bedside light fixtures.

The top part of the fixture shade can be moved, so I attached some leftover macrame yarn I had on hand to it with lark’s heads knots and made a square knot pattern below. This macrame detail can be easily removed if I ever tire of it, but it’s a fun touch for the new season.

Twinkle lights on the floor mirror

Christmas lights aren’t just for Christmas! I wrapped some LED twinkle lights around our floor mirror to give it a romantic glow. Try to think of ways to use your seasonal decor stash from Fall or even Christmas in new ways for Spring!

Personal items as decor

Have a favourite suitcase or hat like I do? Or even some favourite necklaces and earrings? I used those as decor in our bedroom, and you could too!

Using everyday, personal items to decorate is easy, quirky and free.

The rest of the decor I’ve used in our bedroom this season like the accent blankets, lantern, tray and accessories were all things I’ve had for years.

Using old accessories in new ways, or swapping furniture and accessories from room-to-room are both wonderful ways to redecorate for free!

  1. Your bedroom is gorgeous! I absolutely love the ceiling. I would love to know how you made the bench. My husband has a ton of scrap wood that’s just screaming to be used and this would be perfect!

  2. I would love to know where that ceiling fan came from. It is exactly what I’ve been searching for and can’t find!
