Why a kitchen rug runner?

Well, why should you add a runner to your kitchen floor anyhow? I’m a big fan of them for a few reasons. First off, they bring more warmth to your space. Kitchens can tend to look a little utilitarian, and adding textiles like rugs helps make them feel cozier. Second, runners are functional because they can help make your feet feel less tired (like anti fatigue mats). Something soft underfoot will help you feel more comfortable when working in your kitchen.

What to look for in a kitchen rug runner

When choosing a kitchen rug runner, there are a few important features to consider. Firstly, it should be washable, durable, and easy to clean since kitchen spills and stains are inevitable (especially if you have kids and pets). I’m a HUGE fan of Ruggable area rugs since you can remove the backing and throw the top in the clothes washer. They’re also a polyester rug, which is stain resistant much easier to clean than something like cotton or wool. Secondly, the rug should also be stylish and complement your kitchen decor. (Don’t be afraid to go for a bold colour even if you kitchen is all neutral!) Next, it should be safe so that it doesn’t cause any tripping or slipping – look for a non-slip backing or use a non-slip rug pad underneath. Lastly, it’s important to make sure that it offers softness and comfort underfoot, especially if you spend a lot of time standing in the kitchen.

The best size of kitchen runner and why

The size of your kitchen runner depends on the size of your kitchen. In general, a kitchen runner should be at least 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. This provides enough coverage for the high-traffic areas like in front of the stove, sink, and fridge. However, it’s best to measure your kitchen before purchasing a rug runner to ensure a perfect fit. You don’t want to end up with a rug that’s too small or too large for your kitchen.

My favourite kitchen runner size is 2.5 feet wide by 7 feet long. This is the size I have in both my own kitchen and the little kitchen at our Tiny Lake House. I find this offers lots of comfort to do work at the sink and counters. I place my runners in front of the sink and extend them as much as possible on either side.

The best runner patterns of 2023

This year, the trend is to go for neutral colours for an organic modern style. Geometric checkerboard patterns are very popular and add a contemporary touch. For a more traditional look, opt for distressed vintage florals or medallion motifs. Another popular option is to incorporate natural fibers, such as jute or sisal, for a rustic or organic natural look. Whatever pattern you choose, it should reflect your personal style and make you happy every time you step into the kitchen!

The best kitchen rugs in 2023

Here are my favourite runner rugs for this year. Most of them are from Ruggable because that’s the brand that I’ve loved the most for my own kitchen after years of trying different runners!

Kamran Hazel Rug from Ruggable

This is the runner I have in my own kitchen right now and I adore it. It’s a soft, warm grey with lots of different shades and patterns to keep it interesting. It’s a soft, low-pile carpet that feels great on my feet. The rubber style backing can be removed, and the top can be thrown in the wash

Dephina Black & White Rug from Ruggable

For a bolder look with more contrast, this beautiful rug is also machine washable with a separate backing.

Jaque Checkered Stone Rug from Ruggable

I’m seeing checker patterns everywhere this year, so this rug would be a great way to bring the trend into your kitchen.

Maia Soft Black Rejute Rug from Ruggable

With more of a jute-like texture, this rug brings a more natural feel into a space. I have this one in our Tiny Lake House and I love the look and feel! It’s water resistant, so easy to clean, and also a great option for pets because it’s so smooth and easily wipeable.

Morris & Co Blackthorn Forest Rug from Ruggable

A new release from Ruggable, this gorgeous jewel toned runner would be stunning in a kitchen with black or dark wood cabinetry. I love this pattern!

nuLOOM Washable Rug from Amazon

This is a newer style of rug from this brand that’s machine washable. Unlike Ruggable, it doesn’t have a separate backing – the whole thing goes in the wash. I haven’t tried this one yet, but it has great reviews!

How to care for your kitchen rug runner

Once you’ve purchased a kitchen rug, it’s important to properly care for it to extend its lifespan. Be sure to vacuum the rug regularly to keep it clean and remove any debris. Spot clean spills and messes immediately to prevent them from setting in. Most rug runners can be machine washed like my favourites shared above, but be sure to follow the care instructions on the label. Hang the rug to dry or lay it flat to prevent it from warping.

Choosing the best kitchen rug runner for your kitchen floor is all about finding the right balance between functionality and style. Look for a rug runner that is washable, offers softness and comfort, complements your kitchen decor, and is the right size for your space. When it comes to patterns, go traditional or trendy – whatever brings you joy! Finally, properly care for your rug runner to keep it looking and feeling new for as long as possible. With these tips and recommendations, you’ll have a cozy and stylish kitchen in no time. Happy decorating!

  1. I love this! I used to be totally scared of investing in (quality) rugs because I thought I might regret it later on… now I just ALWAYS “preview” them in my room first with an AR rug visualizer, wait a couple days, and then go ahead with the purchase if I’m still thinking about the rug!
